My students participate in studio recitals twice a year and have other opportunities to perform in the community. I teach beginning to early intermediate piano, beginning and intermediate saxophone, and beginning to advanced voice. We have seen this with our own children and our students, and there are few things more exciting than witnessing young people discover a deep love for and understanding of music. We believe that every person has musical ability, no matter their age, and that our job as teachers is to help students recognize and expand their innate capabilities and strengths. We believe that a strong foundation in music theory is essential for continued growth in musical skill and appreciation. Like learning to read words in books, learning to read musical notation on the printed page opens up a world of possibilities. We also strive to develop our students’ ears, and to hone their sensitivity to the nuance of musical pitch, tempo, rhythm, and style. We also emphasize the importance of being able to perform in front of an audience. Not only does this allow students to share their musical talent and the pieces they personally love, but it also develops confidence and poise that translates into other areas of life.

I discovered a love for music at age 9 when I first picked up my grandfather’s alto saxophone. I went on to train in classical voice, and performed professionally in the Sacramento area, including appearances with the Sacramento Philharmonic and the Sacramento Opera Company. I attended Natomas Performing & Fine Arts Academy and gained experience as a music and vocal director for local theater companies.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force for six years, I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis and have enjoyed working with children with special needs over the last several years. I have taught music for the last five years and am currently expanding my musical expertise at the Berklee School of Music. I am also pursuing my NTMA certification in Vocal Teaching.

My studio is a comfortable, fun environment where you can learn piano and music skills for life.

Through private lessons, group lessons, games, motivational challenges, festivals, and recitals, my students learn to play the piano in the classical tradition while also learning music theory, technique, improvisation, accompanying, and performance skills. Each student is unique with their own goals and learning styles. I enjoy tailoring lessons and practice plans to meet each student’s individual needs. I am especially passionate about creating an empowering performance mindset for my students. Many students come to me with a fear of performing. They feel they have failed if they make a few mistakes during a performance. I love creating a new possibility for my students where performing is not about giving a perfect performance — mistakes are going to happen! Performing is about having fun with your audience and creating a meaningful connection with them where you share something that is exciting and meaningful to you. In this context, mistakes are practically meaningless. Everyone is so caught up in the magic of what is being shared that a mistake is nothing more than the musical equivalent of a misspoken word in a sentence that is immediately forgotten and moved beyond. I love creating that context for students because it transfers into school presentations, sports, and church talks, and the confidence they learn from it carries into adulthood.

I also teach basic organ lessons for those of my students who are interested in playing the organ for their church services.

I am a member of the Treasure Valley Federated Music Club, so my students have the opportunity to participate in the Gold Cup Festival.

I have a Bachelor of Music in Performance and Pedagogy from Boise State University, where I studied with Del Parkinson. I continue to take piano lessons to sharpen and hone my skills. Over the years, I have taken lessons from different teachers to broaden my technique and views on music.

Bob has been teaching all piano levels, from beginning to early advanced students, for 30 years. Additionally, Bob teaches classical piano, popular music, theory, composition, jazz harmony, fake book studies, and improvisation. Bob’s ultimate goal with his students is to transfer his teaching skills to them so that they acquire the tools to become their own teachers as time passes.

Bob attended Berklee College of Music as a bass major, majoring in theory and composition. He returned to Philadelphia and decided to continue his formal education, studying piano. He was accepted into the School of Music at West Chester University as a piano major with a degree in music education. Bob studied piano with Dr. Robert Pennington and piano pedagogy on a master’s level with Dr. Paul Blair. Bob performed a Beethoven sonata and a Schumann fantasy suite as part of his senior recital requirements.

I am a traveling teacher! I travel to my students’ homes for lessons. I do not teach at my house.

I started piano lessons at 8 years old and took lessons all the way into my 20s. I learned to play using traditional methods and focused especially on the classics like Chopin and Rachmaninov.
